Encore is both ENTERTAINMENT and ACADEMY; the best in musical theatre presentations combined with fun and engaging in-studio artistic instruction.
Encore Community Arts was founded in 2014 as Encore Entertainment, a musical troupe dedicated to creating and presenting big-stage musicals featuring all local artists. Original works by Krista Norman and Matthew Soper included:
- Rockin’ Eve (2015)
- Livin’ on a Prayer (2016)
- T.I.M.E (2017)
- Santa’s Spawn (2017)
In 2019, Encore's first licensed production of the Broadway hit musical, Rock of Ages, played to sold out crowds in Labrador West and Goose Bay.
The founders of Encore officially incorporated as a non-profit in 2018 and expanded its delivery to offer an annual summer performance festival starring youth artists. The first iteration of the festival paid homage to the mining roots of Western Labrador, We Built This Town. The show and dessert nights were a resounding success; a treat for tourists and residents alike. A second festival was delivered in the summer of 2019 featuring the student’s own work, Opening Up!
In 2019, Encore took yet another leap forward to develop much-needed performing arts education programs for the Western Labrador region. Encore Academy was born! The success of the programs prompted a need for permanent studio space and Encore settled into its new home in the Labrador Mall in May of 2019.
The incredible 3500 square foot studio space is now home to the Academy's 7-day a week programming, including over 36 classes, small live performances and is available for private rentals. Encore continues to evolve and offer new programs for the community. Most recently, DJing, drama, sewing, multiple levels of piano instruction as well as private instruction have been added. The very popular musical theatre programs have presented Disney's Beauty and the Beast and are working on Disney's The Lion King, which is sure to be a treat.
